New Educational Services leader for Washington Unified

Washington Unified School District's Board of Education, at its June 9 meeting, approved the contract for the district's new Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services, William Spalding.

Spalding replaces Sue Brothers, whose reassignment was announced earlier this year.

Superintendent Dr. Dayton Gilleland, who came to West Sac in July 2010 from the San Bernardino School District to take the reins at Washington Unified, said, "I look forward to working directly with Mr. Spalding. Bill was the lead facilitator with a District Assistance and Intervention Team (DAIT) when his group was selected to work with the San Bernardino City Unified School District."

Gilleland said Spalding is collaborative in his approach "and highly effective in his ability to guide the work necessary for improved student achievement. His broad range of expertise and educational experience will be a great asset to the Washington Unified School District and our partnering community."

School board member Adam Menke agreed, saying, "Mr. Spalding comes to our district with a wealth of knowledge and experience which he couples with a great collaborative attitude that will help move this district to a higher academic level in the years to come."

Gilleland, a former Special Education teacher, is exceptionally student-centered in his approach to district services.

Widely regarded as open and accessible, Gilleland's collaborative approach was reportedly key to his success in San Bernardino, where he was well liked and highly respected by staff, students and parents, according to a member of the WUSD school board committee that vetted his application.

West Sac is a move up for Gilleland, who was Assistant Superintendent in San Bernardino. Spalding, as Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, is a key member of Gilleland¹s administrative team.
