Police: Suspicious package spotted in West Sac not a threat

WEST SACRAMENTO - Law enforcement officials determined a suspicious looking canister was not an active explosive device, after evacuating about 50 people Tuesday afternoon in the area of Walnut Street and West Capitol Avenue.

West Sacramento Police Lt. Tod Sockman said a man spotted the suspicious looking metal canister Tuesday around 11 a.m. in a dumpster at Harbor and West Capitol. He took the canister inside of a home on Walnut Street, then called police. Officers said it looked like a homemade device.

A bomb squad and robot were called in to determine if the device was an explosive. Residents in the surrounding area were evacuated as a precaution, and streets were closed. Around 1 p.m. officials declared the device was not a threat and folks were allowed back into their homes.
