Flu cases confirmed –- free vaccine available at the West Sac Civic Center

Yolo County will offer free seasonal flu shots Oct. 22 in West Sacramento, said Yolo Countyspokeswoman Beth Gabor, speaking for Yolo Health Officer Dr. Christian Sandrock. The clinic begins at 8 a.m. at city hall (1110 West Capitol Ave.) and concludes at noon. In Woodland only, the county provides seasonal flu vaccine for $10 on Wednesdays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., at 137 N. Cottonwood St. (the Yolo Health Department).

West Sac volunteers are needed to help with the Oct. 22 clinic.

Volunteering can count toward high school community service hours. For more information, go to volunteer.coordinator@yolocounty.org..

During the 2009-2010 H1N1 Swine Flu outbreak, two West Sac residents, “ages  50 to 59” died from the flu or its complications, Sandrock said. Viral pneumonia was not an uncommon complication.

The county is not offering the pneumonia vaccine.

One Body, Two Worlds by Natachi Mez

I’ve never really walked through the mind of someone other than myself. I’ve attempted it, but then again, how could I be accurate? I don’t know what makes me different from every other girl in the world, but I know the factors that multiply to equal me.

I remember, when I was a lot younger, I wanted a more common name. How many people do you know with the name “Natachi?” I wanted the straight, flowing hair. I wanted the hourglass. As I continue to evolve into a young lady, I embrace my culture. I love my name, which means “from god.” I embrace my hair, and I appreciate everything I have because without them, who would I be?

It’s funny sometimes, looking back. Thinking of all of the ridiculous things that ran through my mind and straight out of my mouth.
