Costumed docents and actors will tell about how couples met and how they died, and recount legends about roses, the symbol of love. Spring beauties awaken

Spring beauties awaken

Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. Join Historic Rose Garden curator Anita Clevenger and Hamilton Square's Perennial Garden's manager Leslie Hurlburt to see and smell spring flowers that have emerged from a brief winter slumber and are blooming brightly throughout the gardens. Visitors will have an opportunity to tour either or both gardens, spending time with volunteers who created and care for them. Both gardens are nestled among the cemetery's monuments, re-creating the garden cemetery that was established in 1849. The Sacramento Historic City Cemetery is registered as a National Historic District. In spring, the combination of blooms and tombs are at their best.

The cemetery is located at 1000 Broadway in Sacramento. There is ample free street parkng on surrounding streets, with limited parking within the cemetery. Tous are free; however, donations are gratefully accepted for garden operatins. For more information, call 916-448-0811.

Rose pruning classes

Rose pruning classes

On Saturday, January 14, the Historic Rose Garden will again host Stephen Scanniello, a Great Rosarian of the World, president of the Heritage Rose Foundation and curator of the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden, for two pruning workshops. This is a chance to learn from an expert and to be regaled with many entertaining tales of roses and the people who grow them. The first, at 9 am, will focus on pruning climbing roses. The second, at 1 pm, and will show techniques for pruning and rehabilitating mature plants. While our workshops are usually free, we would appreciate a minimum of $10 donation to be shared between the Heritage Rose Foundation and for expenses in the Historic Rose Garden.

The cemetery is located at 1000 Broadway, Sacramento. There is limited parking within the cemetery, but parking is also available on surrounding surface streets. For more information, call 916-448-0811.
