Sutter’s Fort to present “Hands on History: The Donner Party and Westward Migration”

Continuing a series of fun and interactive “Hands on History” activities offered each month, Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park (SHP) will present a special “Hands on History: The Donner Party and Westward Migration” event on Saturday, November 19, 2016 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Fort visitors will be delighted to see the recently completed restoration of the historic walls and gates plus have the opportunity to step back in time to learn more about the Donner Party and western migration in general.

The Trees for Tomorrow program is looking for volunteers to help to plant trees in West Sacramento on November 30 from 9 am to Noon. Keeping communities clean, green and cool is what Tree Davis is all about. Their goal is to expand and educate by helping communities plant, and care for trees.

Local museums honor military veterans with celebratory events, activities and admission specials

In addition to its fascinating Gold Rush past, the Sacramento area is rich with an amazing array of state-of-the-art museums and historic sites that offer visitors the chance to explore California’s fine art, history, science, and wildlife treasures all year long. On Veterans Day, many of the 30 members of Sacramento Association of Museums (SAM) are featuring a number of special events and activities honoring military veterans, a sampling of which includes the following:

West Sacramento Winter Wonderland is Dec. 2nd

Join us for West Sacramento’s ultimate holiday celebration. Unite with the West Sacramento Chamber of Commerce, City of West Sacramento, local businesses, schools, churches and community members for an unforgettable evening under the stars. The portion of West Capitol Avenue in front of City Hall will close on the evening of December 2nd and transform into a Winter Wonderland. This year’s tree lighting is envisioned to be an event suitable for all generations in West Sacramento.

Stop by for live music and entertainment, shopping with local vendors, a cocktail corner with local wine and beer, free kids activities including cookie decorating and holiday coloring station… and of course complimentary pictures with Santa along with the annual tradition of lighting our community holiday tree.

The California Automobile Museum is proud and excited to present its annual fundraising gala titled “Art of the Car Starring Garibaldi” on Friday evening, November 4, 2016.
 
This special evening extravaganza will feature world-renowned artist and car enthusiast David Garibaldi and include delicious farm-to-fork cuisine by Diane Wilkinson Catering, artisan cocktails, live entertainment by Ken Koenig and Spare Parts Band, and a silent and LOUD auction (including the art that David produces during his performance). Proceeds from this fabulous fundraising event support the Museum’s many community and education programs and engaging special exhibits.

Railroad Museum debuts timely new exhibit titled “Off the Clock"

California State Parks and the California State Railroad Museum are proud to present a timely new exhibit titled “Off the Clock: Sports Clubs of the Southern Pacific” that debuts on Friday, October 28, 2016. The playful new exhibit is focused on the wide variety of sports clubs, teams and athletic competitions that many Southern Pacific employees participated in during evenings and on weekends in the early to mid-1900s.  In fact, many “off the clock” workers from the Sacramento Shops – now known as the historic railyards – formed intramural teams to compete with one another or against traveling teams and clubs sponsored by the railroad.
