Midtown Business Association Partners with Food Literacy Center to Offer Kids Farmers Market Tours

In an effort to introduce, educate and inspire children to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, the Midtown Business Association has teamed up with the local Food Literacy Center to provide free Kids Market Tours on the 3rd Saturday of the Midtown Farmers Market each week.  The 20-minute kid-friendly tours start at the Budding Foodies children’s area and are available every half-hour from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  Kids of all ages are welcome and parents often enjoy strolling along with the tours as well.

Led by trained “Food Geniuses” from the Food Literacy Center, the tours stop at various Midtown Farmers Market vendors and include sampling of various fresh fruits and vegetables, fun facts, interesting tips and information of special appeal to young children.  Arranged in advance, the fruit and vegetable tastings are always a hit, change each week and include seasonal items such as stone fruit, berries, citrus, carrots, tomatoes, various lettuce options, herbs, cauliflower, asparagus and more.

“We’re proud the fresh and new Midtown Farmers Market is recognized as one of the very best in the region,” said Emily Baime Michaels, executive director of the Midtown Business Association. “And while we love to find ways for people to experience, savor and linger longer, we are very committed to food literacy for all ages, which is a shared goal reflective of our wonderful Midtown restaurants and community.”

Launched earlier this season, the new Kids Farmers Market Tours are a pilot program coordinated by the Food Literacy Center that taps into their “out-of-the-box approach to try new and different ways to expand what kids eat,” said Chief Food Genius Amber Stott at the Food Literacy Center.

The Midtown Farmers Market is located on 20th between J and K Streets and is available on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. year-round.
