Man gets 13 years in prison for assault and hate crime

WOODLAND, CA - Pedro Ramirez was sentenced to 13 years in state prison for an assault and hate crime on Sikh taxi driver Harbhajan Singh.

Yolo County Superior Court Judge Timothy Fall handed down the sentence to the 42-year-old Natomas resident Friday.

Ramirez, along with Johnny Morales, Jr. and their wives caught a ride from Singh from Harlow's Bar in Sacramento to West Sacramento on the night November 28, 2010.

When Singh dropped them off, they demanded a lower fare than the $14 Singh asked for. Ramirez shouted racial epithets and punched the cab driver about 10 time in the face while Morales hit him from behind.

In March, Ramirez pled not guilty for the November 2010 attack on Singh.

Morales, 33 of West Sacramento pled no contest to a felony assault was previously sentenced to felony probation.
