Crime

WEST SACRAMENTO - A man West Sacramento police say was walking on the tracks, was hit and killed by an Amtrak train Sunday afternoon.

The train conductor said he saw a man walking along the tracks about 300 yards east of Harbor Blvd. near Rice Ave. shortly before 4 p.m. The conductor sounded the horn multiple times and attempted to bring the train to a stop, but could not do so in time to avoid hitting the man, police said.

The man, identified on Monday as Mitchell Lee Yarrington, 52, of West Sacramento, was thrown from the tracks and pronounced dead at the scene.

Police did not speculate on why Yarrington was walking on the tracks.

The passenger train remained on the tracks for about two-and-a--half hours as officials investigated the collision.

Around 5:30 p.m., people got off the train, switched to another, and continued onto San Jose.
