WEST SACRAMENTO, CA (AP) - A new charter school that will teach the language and culture of Punjab is set to open in West Sacramento this fall.
The Sacramento Bee reports that the Sacramento Valley Charter School will be the nation's first public Punjabi charter school.
The school approved by the Washington Unified School District is set to open in the fall and serve 120 students from kindergarten through sixth grade.
Officials want to eventually expand it to seventh and eighth grades over the next three years.
The school will teach the language and culture of Punjab, a region in northern India and Pakistan, but it is open to any child.
It's the latest California charter school that caters to a specific ethnicity. Last summer, Sacramento opened a school that teaches Hmong culture and language.
