Sutter Medical Foundation seeks participants for Patient Family Advisory Council

Sutter Medical Foundation (SMF), committed to providing a consistent, high quality patient experience, is looking for additional community members to join their Patient Family Advisory Council (PFAC). The Council helps provide insight and feedback about the experiences patients and their families have had at Sutter Medical Foundation in the Sacramento area.

“We are working to make the voice of the patient and family evident in everything we do,” said Roberta Mori, Director of Patient and Family Engagement at Sutter Health. “At Sutter Health, we value our patients’ voices and understand they can help us to improve and promote patient-centered care.”

Advisors with the PFAC will collaborate with leadership, care teams, and clinical teams at SMF to help improve the patient experience for future patients. They will share their experiences and perspectives, providing SMF staff with an insider’s view about the patient experience and ensuring that the Sutter Health–affiliated medical foundation continuously improves the care they provide for patients and families.

Those interested in learning more about the Patient Family Advisory Council or signing up to be a volunteer can visit www.sutterhealth.org/pfac to complete an online application. Interested community members may also contact SMF via email at patientfamilyeng@sutterhealth.org.

“The feedback a patient can provide us about their experience, or a loved one’s experience, is invaluable and a key factor in how we will improve as an overall healthcare system,” said Heather Foster, Risk Officer for Sutter Medical Foundation and one of the PFAC organizers. “The Patient Advisory Council is a wonderful way to incorporate the patient and family in the culture of our care centers and to help us continue to improve.”

Getting Involved

Sutter Medical Foundation provides care for residents in Sacramento, Placer, Yolo, Yuba, Solano, Amador and Sutter counties. “For now, we are looking to fill our PFAC roster in the greater Sacramento area only,” said Gina Kulm, Integrated Quality Services Specialist at SMF. “We plan to widen our recruitment into our other service areas at a later date.”

Ideal candidates will have experienced the care environment at Sutter Medical Foundation in the Sacramento area within the last five years, either as a patient or family member of a patient, and are looking for an opportunity to give back to the community in a unique way.

Advisors are asked to volunteer four hours per month to various projects related to being a member of the Patient Family Advisory Council. This includes participating in meetings, attending process improvement activities, or attending department meetings. Additional time commitment is based on advisors’ availability and interest in the topic at hand.

The main criteria SMF considers for someone interested in becoming an advisor include:

  • Experience as healthcare consumers (this includes being a caregiver).
  • Interest in playing an integral part in the process of continuous improvement.
  • An open-minded attitude, with willingness to work in a collaborative environment.

·         Time to attend regular meetings.

·         The ability to use clear, tactful communication.

The process for becoming an advisor consists of an initial phone screening, followed by an in-person interview. This is a volunteer position and is not compensated.
