Yolo County Receives Two Recognitions for Countywide Solar Project

Yolo County recently applied for one, and ultimately received two recognitions for its countywide solar project from the California Counties Architects & Engineers Association.

The association honors counties for their achievements in the areas of municipal public projects that contribute to the overall community by being environmentally sustainable, providing enhancement to the workforce and contributing to the local economy.  Yolo County’s solar project with seven megawatts of solar arrays throughout multiple county facilities received first place in the Medium-Sized County category and was also selected to receive the Grand Award as the outstanding project among all submittals.  As one of three counties receiving awards, Yolo County’s project was selected based on a six-part evaluation of such criteria as: project benefits and community/employee enhancement; cost saving measures and creative funding; aesthetics, sustainability, innovation and public-private partnerships.

Yolo County’s solar project was the first of its kind in the areas of:

  • Innovation with zero capital investment
  • Revenue generation with an estimated $60 million over 35 years
  • Sustainability with virtually all reliance on non-renewable energy eliminated while reducing the cost of providing electricity to county facilities

“This project represents the best that public sector architects and project managers do every day for their communities and we are delighted to bestow this award in recognition of their efforts,” said Rob Unholz, president of the California Counties Architects & Engineers Association.

These awards are a wonderful recognition of the Board of Supervisors’ dedication to a sustainable environment,” said Yolo County Administrator Patrick Blacklock.

The California Architects and Engineers Association is a non-profit service organization that supports municipal, public sector architects, engineers and capital project staff across California.  Their mission is to provide interpersonal networking and professional development opportunities, exchange knowledge and information, and promote professional development of California county architectural and engineering professionals. The association’s Annual Projects of Year is celebrating its third year.  For more information, visit: www.ccaea.org.
