Drexel Center Offering $15,000 Scholarships to Members of Sacramento Area Business Groups

SACRAMENTO – The Drexel Center for Graduate Studies in Sacramento today announced that it will offer three special $15,000 Civic Engagement Scholarships to members of chambers of commerce and civically engaged partners in the Sacramento region.

Drexel University, which is known for innovation and partnering with its community to make a difference, is offering the scholarships as a continuation of its effort to develop the next generation of business, nonprofit and civic leaders whose skills will be of great importance to the future of the Sacramento region.

The $15,000 Civic Engagement Scholarship can be applied to tuition for any of the part-time graduate degree programs offered at the Drexel Center for Graduate Studies in Sacramento.

Scholarship finalists will be notified of a date and time when they will be interviewed by the award committee, which will be comprised of leaders of the Sacramento region’s chambers and civically engaged partners.

All of Drexel’s academic programs are focused at the heart of Greater Sacramento’s growth and economic development initiatives – health, entrepreneurial business, human resources, and education.

Scholarship applications can be found online at www.drexel.edu/sacramento and all materials related to the scholarship and admissions application process must be received by August 15. Successful students are expected to begin their graduate studies in Fall 2012.

“Drexel has worked very hard to develop strong partnerships with various business organizations,” said Dr. Sandra Kirschenmann, Associate Vice Provost and Executive Director for the Center for Graduate Studies. “Our faculty has done a tremendous job in structuring innovative, dynamic programs that meet the needs of working professionals and deliver great value to our students. We know our proven approach to learning effectively positions our graduates for success and leadership in their careers and communities.”

Since its inception in 2009, Drexel’s Center has offered a variety of fellowships, scholarships  and grants that are only available in Sacramento, enhancing the region's existing leadership initiatives and supporting working professionals as they advance their careers.

Past scholarship recipients include Dr. Victoria Rosario, an Associate Vice Chancellor with the Los Rios Community College District. A member of the Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Rosario earned a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Management.

Candidates for the scholarships must demonstrate:

  • Community Service: The committee considers not simply community service, but the impact an individual’s service has had on a particular person or group. The committee also considers volunteerism, service learning, fieldwork or internships that show civic responsibility and engagement.
  • Leadership Ability: Candidates must demonstrate leadership ability and commitment to the region.

Drexel – a top-ranked, national comprehensive university – offers Sacramento students six master's, one doctorate and one post-baccalaureate program designed for working professionals in the fields of entrepreneurial business, human resource development, higher education and public health.

Drexel will hold Information Sessions in July through mid-August. For more information about Drexel’s graduate programs in California or to sign up online, visit www.drexel.edu/sacramento or call (888) 389-3781 or (916) 325-4600.
