"Riding the Rails with Mark Twain" this Saturday!

All aboard for a summertime special train ride when the California State Railroad Museum presents “Riding the Rails with Mark Twain” on Saturday evening, July 7.  Guests are invited to enjoy a warm summer evening in Old Sacramento State Historic Park along with Mark Twain (portrayed by local period actor Pat Kaunert), cool refreshments, entertaining live music and a delightful train ride along the Sacramento River.

"Time Travel Weekends" Program Resumes in Old Sac!

For the third consecutive summer and to the delight of guests near and far, the popular “Time Travel Weekends” program will resume in Old Sacramento on Saturday, July 7, 2012.  Designed to entertain and engage Old Sacramento visitors with good, old-fashioned fun reminiscent of the Gold Rush era, the free “Time Travel Weekends” street theater program first debuted in 2010 and will be offered again on weekends from July 7 through August 26, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The “Time Travel Weekends” program is presented by the Historic Old Sacramento Foundation (HOSF) in partnership with the City of Sacramento, California State Parks, Old Sacramento Business Association and participating merchants and businesses.

In addition to its fascinating Gold Rush past, the Sacramento area is rich with an amazing array of state-of-the-art museums and historic sites that offer visitors the chance to explore California’s fine art, history, science, and wildlife treasures all year long.  In July, many of the 29 members of Sacramento Association of Museums (SAM) are proud to showcase a variety of special evening events geared primarily for adults, including:

Fairytale Town presents 'The Readers of Homer'

Fairytale Town presents 'The Readers of Homer'

Friday, Jun. 22, 6:30 p.m. through Saturday, Jun. 23, 7 a.m.

From dusk till dawn, 200 individuals--including children, veterans, poets and teachers--will read aloud pre-assigned passages from Homer's great epic, "The Odyssey." The poem follows the famous hero, Odysseus, and his 10-year struggle to reach home following the end of the Trojan War.

The all-night, nonstop reading, presented in partnership with the Readers of Homer, will take place on the outdoor Mother Goose Stage.

The park opens at 6:30 p.m., and the reading begins at 7:30 p.m.

Attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs and/or tents.

The reading is free for active-duty military, veterans, students with valid ID and children ages 12 and under. Advance tickets are $20 for adults. Day-of tickets are $25 for adults. Tickets will be available for purchase at www.fairytaletown.org and the box office beginning May 15.

“Above Ground” Walking Tours Resume in Old Sac!

In addition to the popular Old Sacramento Underground Tour program already underway for the season, the Historic Old Sacramento Foundation is adding to the fun with intriguing “above ground” walking tours as well.   On weekends beginning June 9,  and continuing through August, two informative walking tours will be offered that include the following: Sacramento City: California’s Gold Rush Legacy Tour and Old Sacramento Architectural Tour: From Canvas to Brick. 

For the Gold Rush Legacy Tours, docents in historically appropriate attire take guests on a journey back to the 1850s using original and reconstructed Gold Rush-era buildings as a compelling backdrop to describe what the town was like during that fascinating period in California’s history.
