Law Dogs Challenge draws a crowd

Law Dogs Challenge draws a crowd

Despite the heat, more than 1,000 spectators turned out June 15 to watch West Sac Police Department K9s and others from throughout the region participate in a SWAT demonstration as part of Law Dogs Challenge 2013.

The Challenge, staged on the softball fields at West Sac's River City High School, is both a training exercise and fundraiser, said West Sac PD K9 Officer Roger Kinney. The nearly $4,000 raised by this year's event helps pay medical expenses for retired dogs, he said, as well as the costs of training and equipment not in the police department's budget.

The first day of the two day Challenge, June 14, demonstrated dogs' ability to sniff out narcotics. (Some police K9s are trained to sniff out bombs and are called in to 'sweep' buildings in Sacramento when dignitaries visit.)

Front Street Shelter Adoption Events

Front Street Shelter Adoption Events

The Sacramento Front Street Shelter sponsors many adoption events at several pet centers throughout the city.  Recently, at Pet Extreme on Sutterville Road,  Lola Montez, a 7-year-old Teacup Chihuahua, stirred up lots of attention. Lola is currently being fostered off-site, but the shelter is full of precious pooches on site as well, all in need of a loving forever home.

Dog lovers defend pit bulls as breed

SACRAMENTO, CA - A pit bull attack that left a woman in Stockton dead Thursday has re-ignited a debate about the breed: Is their reputation for violence deserved?

STORY: Woman killed in apparent pit bull attack in Stockton ID'd

Owners of American Staffordshire Terriers competing at Cal Expo's Sacramento Kennel Club Dog Show will tell you their dogs are often mistaken by the public for pit bulls, so they're intimately aware of the public scorn for pit bulls.

That's especially true for Richard Chatigny. After years of raising Amstaffs and other dogs, he and his wife adopted a pit bull named Sadie.

"She's the calmest. She's the most obedient. She's the most accepting of anybody and everybody. She's a great ambassador," Chatigny said of Sadie.

It really DID look like Spring ~ last week!

It really DID look like Spring ~ last week!

The weekly rains brought Spring on with a vengeance - flowers, bees, blossoms & allergies!

Riding (or walking/jogging) the countryside in Southport during April & May is a glorious thing with rich visual rewards for those who cherish the open spaces still available.
