SLIDESHOW: Victoria's Secret 2010 fashion show

By Andrea Mandell, USA TODAY

NEW YORK - Call it the year of the hot mommy. Behind many of the biggest names on Victoria's Secret's supersized catwalk Wednesday night was a pint-sized tot, waiting at home.

"There are so many girls who have babies," said Alessandra Ambrosio, 29, backstage before the fashion show, not yet changed into the pink silk robe and flip-flops handed to all the models. Her daughter Anja, 2, is starting to recognize Mom's work. "If I show her a Victoria's Secret catalogue or a campaign, she will know which one is me," she said proudly. "And she poses already."

The guests who walked the pink carpet to "a night of a thousand fantasies" included Gerard Butler, Natasha Bedingfield, Adrian Grenier, Alan Cumming, Estelle, Malin Akerman, Tyson Beckford, the Hilton sisters (Paris and Nicky) and members of Maroon 5.

It was the first year back for Adriana Lima, 29, who opened the show, 12 months after giving birth to daughter Valentina.

"To be back in shape for the fashion show, it wasn't easy for me," she conceded, preparing to strut the runway in three outfits, including her opening rock 'n' roll, sheer black number with red accents and the $2 million Bombshell Fantasy diamond bra.

Lima gained 50 pounds in her pregnancy. "I really worked very hard," hitting the gym seven days a week, she said. "I'm very proud of myself, I gotta say, because it wasn't easy." Especially with a new baby. "Sometimes I would go to work out and I had, like, days of not sleeping."

She's planning baby Valentina's first birthday party. Karolina Kurkova's baby (Tobin, 1) will be there, she said. "I organized a little kids' band and face painters for them."

Nearby, Kurkova, 26, babied her feet in oxford-style flats. Twelve-inch heels accompany her two looks: a "super tight leather jumpsuit" and angel wings made of real peacock feathers. "I want to be comfortable until I have to have those high heels" on, she said.

Katy Perry and Akon rocked the runway as different sets revealed themselves.

First, models strutted with leather mini jackets, blue feather wings emblazoned with "tough love" and coated in silver metal and spikes. Then, a sporty theme took over the stage. Models showed off sexy boxing, baseball, racing and soccer outfits. In another set, gingham corsets and plaid wings made their way down the catwalk. Ambrosio, in tiny white panties and paisley sleeves, drew a heart in the air as she walked.

A "wild things" segment also was played out with Kurkova in those peacock feathers. Other models, such as Emanuela De Paula, wore animal prints and body paint that matched accompanying tribal dancers.

Akon, who sang his new single Angel, said of the Angels, "You see them in person, it's like a whole other thing. They're amazing, they're beautiful."

Conspicuously absent was Heidi Klum, who was host of the show last year before hanging up her angel wings after 13 years. "Obviously, it's different," said Ambrosio, who walked with Klum in nine shows.

"I miss the way she walks and her laugh and her personality," Lima said.

Preparing for the show is no piece of cake. A buffet was backstage, but most of the models had been monitoring themselves for weeks.

"I try to eat organic all the time," Kurkova said. "I don't eat white sugar, white flour, processed food."

"I do kickboxing and Pilates," said model Lily Aldridge, who is engaged to Kings of Leon's Caleb Followill. "Closer to the show I do a little bit more, leg lifts and a lot of crunches."

Said Ambrosio: "I called my trainer 15 days ago and started doing the Brazilian butt lift, which is lots of ankle weights. Yesterday, I was lifting 30 pounds on each leg. I was like, dying. But you get immediate results. Your bum gets way more round."

With nary a stunt bump or bruise in sight, model-turned-Transformers 3 actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley arrived earlier in the day by red-eye. "I made it!" she said, sitting in her silk robe backstage.

Chanel Iman was preparing for her first pair of wings. "I've been trying to hold it back from everybody that I finally have wings," she said. "My last wings are 35 pounds." That's heavy, but she had a plan. "I'm going to put them on at the last minute, put my shoulders back, and as soon as I get backstage I'm taking those things off."

The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show airs Nov. 30.
